The European Central Bank is thinking more and more seriously about a digital euro and is now asking the EU population about it.
Christine Lagarde, the former director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the incumbent President of the European Central Bank (ECB), asked the European people on Twitter today to give their opinion on a European Central Bank digital currency (CBDC)
“We are currently still in the testing phase, but we are now starting to collect public feedback so that European consumers can express their preferences and tell us whether they would accept a digital euro in the same way as a euro coin or a euro Euro bank note, if they know that it is central bank money that they can trust, ”as the Bitcoin Billionaire chief states in the accompanying video.
The comments on a possible central bank digital currency were part of a larger review by Lagarde of a „difficult year,“ as she herself says.
The topics she discussed naturally included the coronavirus and how the European Central Bank reacted to it, as well as the possible influence of monetary policy on climate change and how cryptocurrencies are more in line with the modern lifestyles of many Europeans than traditional means of payment and financial products.
„Europeans are increasingly turning to digital channels to save, shop and invest, so we should prepare to introduce a digital euro if it becomes necessary,“ Lagarde said
As Cointelegraph had previously reported, the ECB is already planning a feasibility study for its own digital currency for 2021 . The other central banks in the world are already making efforts in this direction, although progress has varied widely.
Finally, Lagarde’s tweet refers to a poll that Europeans can use to give their opinion on the issue. The head of the ECB writes:
„I would be interested in what you think of it.“
